2017 ICW Trip: Oak Island, NC > Charleston, SC

Our first multiple stop trip! This is the trip where I started to learn about boat trip planning. It involves much more planning when you have multiple stops.

In a perfect world, we would have put our boat over in Southport, since that is where we last left off. We couldn’t find a place where we could launch our boat and leave the truck and trailer, so we found the next closest place, Oak Island. With a long weekend to spare, we decided to make a journey down to Charleston, SC.

First stop: Georgetown, SC
Trip mileage- 104 miles
Hotel- Hampton Inn Georgetown Marina
Marina- Georgetown Landing Marina
What we liked about this stop- This was a quiet town with a really neat waterfront area called The Harborwalk. The Harborwalk was a 1.3 mile bike ride from the hotel through beautiful historic homes. We really enjoyed the waterfront area! We had a great dinner at Big Tuna and stopped in for a few drinks and live music at Buzz’s Roost.

Second stop: Charleston, SC
Trip mileage- 79 miles
Additional stop- We stopped at the Isle of Palms Marina before we got to Charleston for fuel and lunch. This was a great marina with a wonderful store and grill. Next door there is a restaurant called Morgan Creek Grill but with us being in bathing suits and cover ups, we decided to eat at the marina. I must say that I was pleasantly surprised with the selections and the quality!
Hotel- Hilton Garden Inn Charleston Waterfront
Marina- The Harborage at Ashley Marina
What we liked about this stop- I LOVE Charleston! This was Rusty’s first time experiencing one of my favorite places. I prefer to stay on or near King Street but this worked out well because the hotel had a free shuttle to King Street and we were right at the boat. If you’re not familiar with Charleston, King Street and the historic downtown area offer plenty of shopping and dining options.

Third stop (return trip): Murrells Inlet
Trip mileage- 100 miles
Hotel- The Inlet Sports Lodge
Marina- Wacca Wache Marina
What we liked about this stop- This stop definitely surprised us!! We were expecting this to just be a place to lay our heads. We checked into the Inlet Sports Lodge, which was much nicer than we were anticipating and asked for dinner recommendations. We decided to do dinner at Graham’s Landing, where both the food and views were great! We took an Uber to the restaurant since we were dressed up and it would be a long bike ride. Our Uber driver taking us back to the hotel suggested we check out the Marsh Walk. We hadn’t heard about this place and decided to try out his suggestion. We definitely didn’t regret it! There are many restaurants lining a boardwalk overlooking the water. We were there on a Saturday night and there was plenty of live music to be heard.

The trip back to Oak Island was about 73 miles. As always, we were sad to end our trip but we were excited to start planning our next one.
